《FINAL FANTASY III》最初发售於1990年，对应任天堂红白机，也是FC上内容最为丰富、最为细腻的游戏之一。这款游戏为《FF》系列首次引入了职业更换系统，玩家可以在战士、黑魔导士等。《FINAL FANTASY》在SFC之前的6款游戏多数都在其他平台上推出了复刻版，而《FINAL FANTASY III》则是其中唯一一款没有推出复刻版游戏的作品，也从未在日本之外的国家推出。
